Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES)
Our club members are active in the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), an organization of emergency service volunteers covering Canada and the United States.
ARES is devoted to supporting front-line emergency service providers (police, fire, etc.) with communications services and other support in the event of major emergencies and disasters.
Around North America, floods, storms, and other disasters have destroyed communications systems in addition to the other damage they have caused.
Cell phone networks have been disabled, or have become so over-loaded that they have been unreliable for emergency communications. Even the communications systems used by police and other emergency providers have been compromised or destroyed.
Members train to work with government officials and emergency service providers in the event of such disasters. They ready themselves to set up emergency communication systems and backup support to ensure that our front-line agencies can continue to communicate and coordinate their work.
There are many facets to the amateur radio hobby, and this is but one of them. For more information, come out to one of our meetings or contact us via our Contact Us page.
